Conserving Energy on Your Island

By Islomaniac | June 18, 2007

Over the last few years I have been growing more concerned about the environment. Therefore I have been taking steps to make my island home more energy efficient. I though I would share with you today some things I have done to shrink my environmental impact. You don’t need to be an island owner to do any of these things either!

1.Install energy efficient lighting. I did this a year ago and I haven’t had to change a single light bulb. They are more expensive but they pay for themselves both in the time that they last and the energy they save.

2.Energy efficient windows: My previous windows were pretty good, however in the winter I often could feel a draft. Therefore I recently installed brand new Pella double pain energy efficient windows. These have made a remarkable difference.

3.Insulate: most cottages and island homes were built in an era of little or no insulation since they were designed primarily for summer time use. My home was insulated, but I recently had a spray foam insulation done in my attic. I really noticed the temperature difference on the second floor of my house this winter.

4. Switch to energy star or high energy efficient appliances. By ditching that old fridge you can save up to $150 dollars a year in energy. Within a few years the new fridge has paid for itself.

5. Get a timer for your thermostat or acknowledge its existence. When you leave for the day, turn the thermostat down. It doesn’t need to be 75 degrees when no one is home. If you have a timer you can set it to come on a half hour before you get home. In addition, turn it down at night, and throw on an extra blanket.

6.Give your water heater a hug: At most home stores you can get these blankets to wrap your water heater in to keep it from using so much energy. It’s simple and it works This is all I can think of for now. If anyone has any other practical suggestions, I would be happy to hear them.
