Amazing Amanu Atoll

By Islomaniac | June 29, 2007

A week or so ago I did a post on a fantastic website called ocean dots (see post here). I thought today I would feature another of their magnificent photographs. Today’s feature atoll is Amanu which is located in the Pacific Ocean in the southern part of the Tuamotu Archipelago. Amanu measurs 29 km in length and averaging 9 km across. The outer reef crest of the atoll is continuous, except for three narrow passages on the western rim, essentially enclosing an interior lagoon of some 240 km² in area. Every time I look at one of these Atolls it feels like I am looking through a microscope at a single cell organism.

Thanks for the oceandots tip last week. The kids and I have since spent some fun time there, especially exploring the northern chain of Hawaiian islands and also (for some odd reason), the Arctic islands.

Amanu is an interesting place — I wonder what it was like, say, 2 million years ago?
