Islands in Conflict: Kahoolawe Struggle
By Islomaniac | July 3, 2007
One of my readers suggested that I write about Kahoolawe, Hawaii. Since 1941 Kahoolawe had been a U.S. Navy bombing target, eventually being returned to the state in 1994. However, its return followed years of protest, with locals fighting for the return of their island. One such activist was George Helm Jr. who went missing in 1977, while spearheading the occupation and eventual return of Kahoolawe island to Hawaii. Now the story of George Helm Jr., and the movement he initiated is being turned into a movie. It is hoped that audiences will come away from the film with an understanding of the Hawaiian movement and its cultural values, and respect for Hawaii’s natural resources. Thank-you to Rod who recommended this story, you can read more about it here.
