Ocean Dots Atoll: Ducie Island
By Islomaniac | July 29, 2007
When I came across this atoll on one of my favorite sites Ocean Dots I knew I had to share it with everyone. For some reason the island and the water surrounding it remind me of a deep space photo of a supernova. Its amazing how something so remote on Earth can remind us of something so remote in space.
Ducie Island is the easternmost island in the Pitcairn group, sitting 535km east-northeast of the infamous Pitcairn Island. The island, only .7km2 consists of one large islet and three smaller ones on the southern side. The islets enclose a shallow and sand lagoon that contains numerous coral ridges and reefs. Ducie Island is an important spot for seabirds who breed on the atoll
