An Eco-Friendly Way to Live on Your Island
By Islomaniac | July 30, 2007
Want to find a way live on your island without living really “living on” your island. A company called Free Spirit Spheres specializes in the construction of spheres that can be mounted in trees. These spheres provide a means of leaving your island pristine and untouched all while providing the comforts of home. Click below to read more and see more pictures!
The spheres can be hung from the trees or from any other solid objects like buildings or rock faces. Each sphere has four attachments on top and another four anchor points on the bottom. Each attachment is strong enough to carry the entire sphere and contents.
Wood spheres are made of two laminations of wood strips over laminated wood frames. The outside is then finished and covered with clear fiberglass. The result is a beautiful and very tough skin. Fiberglass shells are also available. The skins are waterproof and strong enough to take the impacts that come with life in a dynamic environment such as the forests. The structural integrity of a sphere and the ability to move and absorb shock loads combine to produce a robust accommodation package.
A handcrafted sphere that sleeps 4 sells for $150,000 however you can purchase the shell for just $9,200.
