Internet Access on Your Island: Part 2
By Islomaniac | July 30, 2007
A while back I posted this article on internet access on private islands. As I am sitting in my small office looking out onto my island I notice my dock and the large Muskoka chairs that rest upon it. I am wishing that I could take my laptop out there to write my posts. Now it may be possible. A new product called the Meraki Mini outdoor boosts your signal and allows you to access the internet outside of the confines of typical wireless internet coverage…even on the dock of your island! The Meraki Mini Outdoor ($99) is a weatherproof version of the Meraki Mini. It stands up to rain, snow, sleet, wind, hail, and direct sunlight. What’s better is the outdoor system can provide its own power with the optional solar charger ($300). What I think makes this product great is it has so much potential for island lovers. Whether you are a renter or an owner who wouldn’t love to read all about islands online from the beach or the dock. This is one product I will be looking into.

I just did a rather elaborate “how-to” post on setting up your own Meraki network. I set mine up in about 15 minutes and it’s worked flawlessly ever since–including providing me service out in my back yard, just as you describe here. Really a remarkable (and relatively cheap) piece of tech:
