Islands Included in List of Most Endangered Destinations
By Islomaniac | July 30, 2007
MSN.com just came out with a list of the worlds most endangered destinations. The list included places like Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Everglades and the Netherlands. The list also included a couple of island regions. The tiny island nation of Tuvalu was listed as one of the most vulnerable regions in the world. In the article MSN states “No countries are as fragile in the face of rising oceans as low-lying island nations, many of which are among the most popular tourist destinations. The tiny Pacific atoll nation of Tuvalu has been in talks with New Zealand about a possible evacuation of its 11,000 inhabitants if the oceans continue to rise.” The article also mentions South Georgia Island (see my post on the South Sandwich Island here). Studies have shown that both poles are warming at a rate far faster than the rest of the planet, leading to decreased ice thickness and an increase in ice shelf disintegration. The tropical island of Tuvalu (left) and the frigid island of South Georgia share a common destiny if the effects of global warming are not curbed.
