Angel Island has a Rich History

By Islomaniac | August 2, 2007

I’ll admit it; I’m a sucker for islands with history. Angel Island in California has a rich and often dark history. The island was first a fishing and hunting site for Coast Miwok Native Americans. Upon the arrival of Europeans the island was used a cattle ranch (which decimated the islands oak trees). Later the island became a US Army camp during the civil war, the Spanish-American war and was used during several campaigns against Native Americans. The island is most notably remembered as being the entry point approximately 175,000 Asian immigrants entering into the US, serving a similar role to Ellis Island for European immigrants. Even today you can see Chinese poems engraved into the walls of the buildings. During the Second World War German and Japanese POW’s were held on the island. Today the island is a state park and the immigration station has been designate as a state landmark. If you would like to read more about this island click here.
