San Francisco’s Treasure Island Going Green
Treasure island, a 400 acre man made island in San Francisco Bay was originally built for the world’s fair in 1939. The 400 acre island will once again be a showcase for sustainable, eco-friendly design. The redeveloped island will include 6,000 high rise and low rise housing units, as well as restaurants, a ferry terminal, an art park and a 20 acre organic farm. The island will also be home to a wind farm to help generate power for the residents. All of this will fit into just 100 of the 400 acres which means that there will be plenty of green space for people to enjoy.

Planning for the redevelopment of Treasure Island started back in 2001 and the first residents are expected to move in as early as 2013, with the project being completed in 2022. This development follows closely on the heels of the renovation of the more famous SF bay island of Alcatraz.
