Water Shortages in the Maldives
By Islomaniac | August 13, 2007
In most highly industrialized countries we have the luxury of having an abundant supply of fresh water.
We often forget that in many nations, particularly small island nations, water is a rare resource. For example, the average Maldivian has access to only 103 cubic meters of water per year. This is far less than the consumption of the average American. The situation in some areas is so severe that in a 2004 survey 30% of Maldivian’s reported not having enough water to drink.

housekeeper know that you do not need your towels changed every day. Washing machines use a significant amount of water, water that could be used for other purposes. Thirdly, before choosing a resort inquire with the resort about how they obtain their water supply and what they are doing to conserve water. Consider staying at the most eco friendly resort. Finally, make a donation to a local environmental charity. Giving something back to the environment is a great way to offset your ecological footprint.

The second paragraph doesn’t sound right. Believe me, tourists have nothing to do with water shortages in the inhabited islands of the Maldives. However, ofcourse, they can help to offset their ecological footprint by helping to conserve water, choosing the right resort, etc. All tourists must do that and Maldivian resorts should become environmentally friendier than ever before.

Hi, Thanks for brining this critical issue to the attention of visitors to this site. It is not true to say that “As tourists from western countries we play an important role in the water shortages in the Maldives. The ever increasing influx of tourists to the island nation is putting an ever increasing strain on the tiny island nations already limited water resources.” This is inaccurate. Why? Resort islands produce fresh water by using reverse osmosis plants (ROPs)which converts salt water to fresh water. Furthermore , every resort in the Maldives is developed on an uninhabited island. The inhabited islands do not have the pleasure of having the benefit of such facilities. They consume ground water or rain water. Since tsunami the salinity level of ground water in most islands have increased. My message is by saving water in resorts indirectly helps the Maldivians. But those islanders who do not have fesh drinking water will not get any benefit from the actions mentioned in your article. What you could do is raise money and provide facilities for rain water collection or install reverse osmosis plants. Thank you.

Well if you want to preserve the scarse fresh water in the Maldives. Lets not forget the amount of water stored at Theemuge for cleaning of golaabo, the wife (thunfuhi) and the spolit Grown up kids:-) who have no respect to the islands; Wasting everything they can get their hands on.
