Exploring the Tiwi Islands

Tiwi IslandsThe Tiwi Islands are located in the Northern Territory of Australia off the coast of Darwin. The islands sit at the junction of the Arafura and Timor seas and are comprised of Melville and Bathurst Island.

The islands have a combined total of 8320 km² and are inhabited by the Tiwi who have lived on the islands since long before the arrival of Europeans. The Tiwi are an Indigenous Australian people that are distinct from their mainland counterparts. There are approximately 2,033 people living on the island of which approximately 94% are Aboriginal. Tiwi Islands Although Tiwi is their first language English is widely spoken.

The islands are part of an Aboriginal Reserve established in 1912 with ownership ceded to the Tiwi’s in 1980. Football is the most popular sport on the islands and the Tiwi Islands Football League Grand Final which is a cultural event held in March each year draws up to 3,000 spectators. Tiwi footballers are renowned for their excellent skills and their tendency to prefer playing barefoot.
