By Islomaniac | August 30, 2007

Cartagena drug islandColumbia officials stated on Monday that they have seized the private Caribbean island as well as hunreds of other properties allegedly owned or used by a powerful cocaine trafficker. Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadia was arrested in a luxury condominium on the outskirts of Sao Paulo back on August 7th. In addition to the private Caribbean island, 300 other properties were seized including, farms, apartments, empty lots and even a gymnasium. The combined total value of all of these properties is valued at around $400 million. The private island is located near the Caribbean city of Cartagena but no other details have been provided. Ramirez Abadia — nicknamed ”Chupeta,” or lollipop in Colombian Spanish — is considered one of the ringleaders of the Norte del Valle drug cartel, Colombia’s most powerful. The United States had offered a $5 million reward for his capture. This story is the Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadiaperfect example of what you cannot do on a private island. Many people are under the assumption that they can start their own country on a private island, or they can act illegally without consequences since they are on a private island. The fact of the matter is, private islands are all part of some soverign territory and illegal activities or actions will subject you to the penalties of whatever country the island is in. I will do a little digging and see if I can find out where the island is.
