Visiting Jersey Island
By Islomaniac | September 13, 2007
I’m not talking about New Jersey, I am actually talking about its name sake or the “original Jersey.” Jersey is the largest of the Channel islands which are a British Dependency that sit off the coast of Normandy France.
Although the island is British it is neither part of the UK nor the European Union. Its proximity to France means that this very British island has french influenced cuising, a warmer climate than England and beautiful beaches. The island is highlighted by expansive networks of scenic walking paths as well as superb golf courses.
The majority of people who live on Jersey were not actually born there, with 47% originating in other countries. The island is home to approximately 88,000 people, 30% of which live in Saint Helier, Jersey’s largest city. Two-fifths of the population are of Jersey/Norman descent and two-fifths of British descent. The reason for such high immigration is due to the large emigration of its young people who leave for opportunities not provided on the island.
To me Jersey sounds like the perfect place to retire. An aging population means there are many of my contemporaries, the climate is warm and sunny, there is an annual film festival and there are plenty of golf courses and hiking trails. In addition you are relatively close to large European cities, which means travel is both accessible and affordable. That being said I think if my grandkids visited they would be bored out of their minds.
