Monsters on Islands
By Islomaniac | September 17, 2007
I was watching King Kong last night and naturally I was captivated by the strange beauty of Skull Island. The presence of this misunderstood beast on an island got me thinking about the trend of placing strange monsters and mythical creatures on islands. King Kong isn’t the only movie that has done this, Jurassic Park was set on an island and the Island of Dr. Moreau was home to the strange and frightening creations of a mad scientist. I guess it makes sense. Islands are closed, often isolated territories, separated from the rest of the world. It is logical to assume that if dinosaurs or large creatures were to survive the ravages
of disaster and extinction it would probably be on some remote island. In addition, if someone were to want to create new species and push the limits of genetic engineering, an island would probably be the ideal place to do it, far away from the prying eyes of governments. In any case monsters and islands seem to go together well, at least in movies. The use of islands as the setting for these types of movies only goes to prove islands are places of mystery, beauty and secrets. All that being said I am pretty sure there are no dinosaurs on my island.
