Guns and Islands: A Dangerous Combination?

By Islomaniac | September 27, 2007

islands and gunsWhen you own an island there is a certain amount of risk involved.  Much like homes on the mainland, islands can occasionally become the targets of thieves. In addition in some areas of the world’s island owners may have to worry about pirates in the area.

The presence of these dangers, no matter how remote often results in island owners wondering if they should invest a gun to protect themselves and their island.  This is a difficult decision for owners to make given the inherent safety risks associated with owning a gun.

I will not tell anyone what to do, as it is there choice.  However, I would urge people to give it careful thought before purchasing a gun.  I feel the most important thing you can do is be prepared in the event of such an emergency. Have the names and numbers of local law enforcement, don’t purchase an island in a region known for a high crime rate, have an escape plan in the event of such an occurrence, and most importantly don’t make yourself a target.

On a final note I just want to remind people that most island locations are very safe and it is most likely you will never have a problem on your island.  Rather I have posed the question to encourage people to think about the safety risks that could affect them on their island.  Personally, I have lived on my island for a large portion of my life, and have never once thought a gun would make me any safer, nor have I ever had a desire to get a gun.

Well.. my Dad always said that if you don’t know anything about a firearm then dont mess with it!
I guess that you’d urilize a lamp to defend yourself.
You’re espousing the typical anti-gun diatribe that has no basis in fact.

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I am glad you felt free to share it on my website. I am curious as to how telling people to think before getting a gun is considered anti-gun? I actually made a point of saying “I will not tell anyone what to do, as it is there choice. However, I would urge people to give it careful thought before purchasing a gun.”
