Russia Shaped Island to be Built in Black Sea
By Islomaniac | September 28, 2007
In a development that is reminiscent of the World project in Dubai, developers from Russia have recently released plans to develop a 350 hectare island in the Black Sea shaped like Russia. Presented by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the project is part of a redevelopment plan for future Olympics held in Sochi in 2014. The Russia shaped island is actually an archipelago of islands. There will be seven main islands, about a dozen private and three breakwater islands. The main and private islands will feature residential buildings as well as hotels and various leisure facilities. When completed, the Federation Island would simultaneously house up to 70,000 people. During the 2014 Olympics the island will house around 25,000 people in apartments in villas. This large
island will also have two marinas, three religious centers, roads, parkland and artificial rivers which will be designed to mimic some of the major rivers of Russia. Expected to cost around $6.2 billion dollars construction is expected to begin next year. Other venues are being planned for construction around the artificial island, and major renovations are being undertaken to renew the regions aging Soviet era infrastructure.
