How Long Does it Take to Sell an Island?

By Islomaniac | October 4, 2007

Bonefish caySince islands aren’t exactly traditional forms of real estate, many prospective island owners and sellers are interested in figuring out how long it takes to sell an island. Knowing the potential for the resale of an island is an important question many island owners want answered before they even consider buying an island. Nonetheless, the question of how long it takes to sell an island is a difficult one. It really depends on several factors including the following:

  1. Location -A good island location is one that is near other developed regions, one that is in a safe location, in a temperate/tropical climate, and is easily accessible. A good location is attractive to prospective buyers and will help ensure that your island sells quickly.
  2. Marketing-An island will sell quicker if it is marketed appropriately. This should not be advertised liberally all over the internet. Some island “brokers” will whore an island out to every magazine and blog. My advice is to work with reputable firms such as Private Islands Online or Vladi Private Islands as they have the experience and knowledge to effectively market your island.
  3. Price- Ensuring your island is being sold at a fair market price is crucial. Islands are difficult to appraise and many island owners and some brokers will over inflate the price of an island, believing that people are dumb enough to fall for it. Unfortunately people are pretty perceptive and will quickly catch on to an overpriced island. This can mean big problems for island owners who will quickly find out that there island is unsellable because people believe that you are untrustworthy.

Overall if you want to sell your island quickly, buy an island for a good price in a highly desirable and politically stable location close to many amenities. Market your island with reputable firms and don’t over inflate the price of your island. Following these tips will not guarantee that your island will sell quickly, but at the very least it will help.
