Water Treatment for Your Island

By Islomaniac | October 16, 2007

Pure waterWhether you live on an island surrounded by salt water or one set upon a pristine fresh water lake you will want to consider some form of water treatment as it is very rare to have water that is completely drinkable.  It is not to say the water is dirty, rather our immune systems are so adapt to treated water that we often can handle the bacteria in untreated water.  In any case before purchasing a water treatment device you want to make sure that it treats the contaminates unique to your water.  I recently came across a couple of charts that are great for helping to determine what system is right for your water.

The first chart comes from Private Islands Living and it describes the different types of filters and what they specifically treat. Click here to see the Private Islands Living chart.

The second  chart comes from water filter comparisons. This chart is similar to the one at Islands Living the difference being that it provides information on the price of the filters and approximately how much it costs per gallon. You can view the chart here.

Although this article may seem a little mundane it is essential that perspective island owners take water filtration seriously. Fresh and clean water is the most important necessity on private islands and therefore it is important to find one that meets both your needs and budget.
