Island Conflict in the Persian Gulf

By Islomaniac | October 20, 2007

Abu MusaIslands are typically peaceful paradises, but from time to time they become the site of conflict. Most often island conflict centers around ownership of an island (i.e. Hans Island in Canada/Denmark). Recently there has been conflict in the middle east over the island of Abu Musa which is claimed by both the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iran. These two countries both value the land given its economic, security and environmental value. In addition, the island is potentially teaming with oil reserves marking it an extremely valuable piece of property.

Although traditionally the island has been seen as part of Iran the UAE’s claim could start an international crisis. In addition to this potential looming conflict their are environmental concerns that an oil spill around the island could be disastrous to nearby plant and animal life.

In any case it will be interesting to see how this case resolves. It is my hope that the dispute is resolved peacefully however, conflicts over islands tend to get heated and even more so when resources and security are at stake.
