Living Free on Spiral Island
By Islomaniac | October 28, 2007
Although destroyed by Hurricane Emily in 2005 I thought I would write about Spiral Island. For those of you who don’t know Spiral Island is one of the most famous man made islands to be constructed in recent years. Although not luxurious like the “World” Dubai, what made Spiral Island special is that it was constructed out of discarded plastic pop bottles.
The island Which was situated in a lagoon near Puerto Aventuras, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico and was built by British eco-pioneer Richart (Rishi) Sowa in 1981. To build the island Rishi filled nets with plastic bottles which supported a structure of bamboo and plywood which was ultimately covered with sand, plants and mangroves. The island was not only environmentally friendly, but it was also practical sporting a two-story home, a solar oven, a self composting toilet and an impressive three beaches. The island was constructed out of 250,000 bottles resulting in the overall size of the island being about 66ft by 54 feet. Sowa who is an environmentalist living in Mexico believes firmly in low impact living. No word yet on whether or not he will build an island, but I would like to see what he can do.
