Islands for the Elderly
When I was younger I could imagine being old on an island. The risk of injuring oneself and not being able to get medical attention seemed too great. However, as I am getting older I am beginning to realize that islands are not only for the young. Older people can also enjoy private islands well into old age. Advances in technology, especially communication and transportation, have made islands easier to access. These developments have increased safety and mobility ten fold. As a result islands are now open to a larger population of individuals. Nonetheless, here are some things to consider if you are older person interested in buying/renting a private island.
- Get something closer to shore. In the event of trouble having an island close to shore ensures that you will quickly be able to leave the island and access resources on the mainland.
- Purchase an island that is close to a more developed area. In particular ensure that there is a medical facility near by that can meet your needs.
- When building on your island, even if you are still young and mobile consider constructing a one floor home. Minimizing the number of stairs will make your home safer and more practical in your old age.
- Get to know your neighbors. Whether they are on the mainland or on another island introduce yourself to those who are aroundĀ and ask them to keep an eye out for trouble. This will provide you with added safety and security.
- Consider building on a co-op island. Although rare, small communities of just a few homes are starting to pop up on islands around the world. These communities are small enough to give you the private island experience but large enough to ensure that you can obtain services and assistance.
