Keeping Your Island Eco-Friendly
By Islomaniac | November 17, 2007
I have a friend who is a developer and is going to hate me for writing this post, but nonetheless here I go. As the world warms and people become more environmentally conscious people are starting to think about the impact their lifestyle is having on the environment. As a result a new trend among island owners is to preserve their islands in a natural state.
What this means is that island owners are now no longer doing the following
- Dredging waters to remove sea weed
- Removing brush from beaches
- Spraying pesticides to kill bugs
- Clearing trees to build cottages
- Completing any construction on their islands
- Purchasing high horse power (noisy) boats.
Instead island owners are doing the following:
- Camping on their islands using portable shelters
- Using canoes and pontoon boats as transportation.
- Preserving their islands unique biosphere.
- Collaborating with environmental protection groups to preserve wildlife in and around their island.
Although this is a deviation away from the traditional view of island ownership it is becoming a popular alternative for those interested in preserving their islands. In my opinion although I love my developed island there is something more natural and authentic about an undeveloped island.
