Was Buried Treasure Found on Norman’s Cay?

By Islomaniac | November 25, 2007

Normans CayAn avid reader of my blog sent me a fascinating story the other day that I am compelled to share with you all. Captain Craig Boorman sent me the following story about something mysterious found on Norman’s Cay after Hurricane Floyd. Here is what happened according to Cpt. Boorman.

Many years ago on Normans Cay is in the Exuma Chain, someone built a runway on the island. Back in the drug running days (60s thru the 80s) Normans was the perfect drop off point so Carlos Lehder the famous ruthless Columbian drug dealer now in jail and may have died there bought the island or most of it.

I have heard of lots of bad things happened on that island and lots of money was flown to and from the place, even now there is a wrecked drug plane in the shallows.

There were about 11 homes on it and not too many more now, but one of the homes employed a caretaker. The story goes there was an Australian pine tree near the shore line somewhere near Carl’s big home (empty and falling apart at the time of the storm) and this tree had a old rusted piece of anchor chain wrapped around a limb and nobody ever paid attention to it because if you ever walked the beaches of the Bahamas there is junk all over the beaches.

Time passes and life goes on. Here comes hurricane Floyd and it was bad there so after the storm passed this caretaker was scouting the island and beaches, he came across this uprooted tree and found something partially buried. Now, other people who knew this guy on the island have told this story but to this day I do not know what he found only that is was enough to retire and the caretaker quit and left the island a week later.

I have sailed to Normans many time and have searched Carl empty house and surrounding areas but never found anything, it’s been searched hundreds of times by many visitors’

Thanks for the story Cpt. Craig, if you would like to share your island stories/experience e-mail me at mark.amherst (at) gmail.com. For more information on Norman’s Cay visit here
