Tulip Island

By Islomaniac | December 15, 2007

Tulip IslandI have never heard of this project before, and I am skeptical about the legitimacy of the rumors about the project. However, it is certainly not the first time humans have endeavored to build islands that resemble real objects (i.e. The World Dubai, the Palm Dubai).

Apparently the Dutch have come up with a radical scheme to put themselves on the map with a plan for a tulip-shaped island. Unlike the Palm Island, which was designed as a exclusive tourist paradise, the tulip island would be built to ease overcrowding and shield the coastline from flooding.

Early proposals of the island indicate that the Tulip would be about 50km long. Supporters of the scheme say it will give Dutch companies a chance to showcase water management skills that are increasingly in demand due to global warming. Critics argue the plan is impractical, expensive and may harm ecosystems.

Naturally I will be keeping my eye on this project. If anyone has any updates feel free to let me know.

This isn’t the only constructed island meant to ease crowded situations. Hulhumale in the Maldives was created for the exact same reason.
