Island Constructed to Save African Birds

By Islomaniac | January 15, 2008

flamingo islandAs much as it is great to develop and live on islands, it is also great when islands are used/constructed in order to preserve plant and animal species. Recently an island was been constructed at the Kamfers Dam in South Africa in order to protect the Lesser Flamingos of the area.

The island, which is know as Flamingo Island is part of a large permanent wetland area and provides breeding ground for 500 young flamingos to hatch (and thousands more still to hatch). The S-shaped Island measures 250m by 25m and it is the third of its type in the world. A submersed pump, powered by three solar panels provides water for four ponds on the island and ensures wet clay for the flamingos to use in the construction of their nests.

I think that this project is fantastic and that the fusion between islands and technology are being used in a way to preserve endangered/at risk species.
