The Rock of Gibraltar

By Islomaniac | February 3, 2008

Rock of GibraltarAlso known as the Pillar of Hercules the Rock of Gibraltar is a monolithic limestone island located of the southwestern tip of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. The Rock rises 1,396 feet high and is about six square kilometers in size.

The rock, which borders Spain, but is a colony of the UK is interesting mix of urbanization and preservation with most of the rocks upper area covered by a nature reserve and a highly urban city near the coast. The nature reserve is home to approximately 250 Barbary Macaques which are the only wild monkey found in Europe. These monkeys along with an extensive and historic labyrinth of tunnels, attracts large numbers of tourists each year.Gibraltar

The Rock is a world famous destination and as such is a very popular island destination. There are numerous hotels on the island, most of which are in the town center, situated on the sea and close to businesses and shopping. Rates for hotels can be as cheap as £65.00 a night and are typically considered high quality.

I have never been to the Rock of Gibraltar but it is certainly a very unique island with an incredible geography and quite a remarkable history. To read more about the island click here.

UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that the Rock of Gibraltar is not an island! As it turns out the Rock of Gibraltar is peninsula.  My apologies to all the residents of the region.

All in all… a very nice post and thanks for featuring our homeland. Only… just one small point… Gibrataltar is NOT an Island… in any sense of the word.

You want to read up your Wikipedia link on Gibraltar mate!

    Saludos! ;)

What? Clearly I dropped the ball on this one. Someone sent me a suggestion that I write about it, I guess something got lost in translation.

    Apologies to all.
