Luxury Underwater Resorts

By Islomaniac | February 9, 2008

I will admit that underwater hotels are not exactly the same as private islands. However, they are in many ways similar to private The Hydropolisislands, and given that many are extensions of private islands resorts, I feel that they are worthy of inclusion in any discussion on private islands.

I recently came across some incredible undersea hotels that are either in the process of being constructed, or already built.

The Hydropolis, Dubai

It seems that everything is bigger and more luxurious in Dubai! The Hydropolis is no exception. The current project is aiming to be the world’s first luxury underwater hotel when it’s completed. It will have a land station with a tunnel connecting guests to the 220 underwater suites.

Unnamed Project, The South PacificSouth Pacific Under Sea Hotel

Also competing in the race for the world’s first under sea hotel is Poseidon Mystery Island. The complex is being designed by Bruce Jones, an internationally renowned designer known for his $80 million luxury submarine. Details are limited on the project but it is expected to cost $105 million and be submerged next to a private island. It sounds like the ideal getaway to me. You get both the private island and underwater resort experiences all in one convenient package!

Jules’ Undersea Lodge, Florida

Jules Undersea LodgeWant to visit an underwater hotel today? Well there is already one in existence off the coast of Florida. Jules’ Undersea Lodge was once an underwater research habitat used by scientists. Today, it is an exclusive hotel open to the public. Although not a luxury resort like the previously mentioned projects, The Lodge still features many amenities including air conditioning, music, and hot showers. You can stay for days underwater, with the only catch being you have to dive to get there.

Although not exactly private islands, underwater hotels offer privacy, isolation and exclusivity much like their private island counterparts. I would expect to see more of these projects over the years as peoples tastes begin to move from the mundane to the exotic.
