Really Big Private Islands

By Islomaniac | February 14, 2008

Wilson IslandWhen most people think of private islands they think of small, quaint and isolated pieces of land floating unobtrusively in the middle of the ocean.  Although many islands do meet this stereotypical profile, many islands are anything but small.

In recent years, as more and more islands have come onto the market I have seen an increasing number of very large islands, sometimes thousands of acres in size coming on to the market.  Island such as Wilson Island in Ontario (4,643 acres), Ronde Island in Grenada, (2,000 acres), Lisbon Island in Portugal (3,000 acres), Macapule Island in Mexico (5,229 acres) and Mangunca Island (3,700 acres) in Brazil are all exceedingly large islands Macapule Islandcurrently available for sale.

So this begs the question, who buys these massive private islands?  The answer is a lot of people.  The most common purchaser of these properties are resorts who typically plan on extensively developing the property for their guests. However, they may also be purchased for planned communities, farming purposes, ecological preserves and in some cases for private use.

Whatever these islands are used for, and despite their often high price tag, they do eventually sell, meaning there is a market out there for really big private islands!
