The Aleutian Islands-An Alaskan Archipelago

By Islomaniac | February 19, 2008

Aleutian IslandsMost people have heard of the Aleutian Islands, but few could probably find them on a map.  The Aleutian Islands are an arc of volcanic islands in the earth quake prone zone stretching 1,900km from the Alaskan Peninsula towards the Siberian Peninsula of Kamchatka.

The Aleutian Islands are made up of about 14 main islands, the largest of which is Unimak which has an area of 4,118km².  The Aleutian Islands are mountainous, being the emergent peaks of an underwater mountain range.  Part of the famous Ring of Fire, the islands are subject to strong earthquakes and active volcanism.

Despite seeming barren and lifeless the islands are inhabited. The natives of the islands refer to themselves as Unangan and are now generally known by most non-natives as the Aleut.  Because of the location of the islands, it is believed by many anthropologists that this broken bridge of islands was the route the first human occupants of the Americas, with evidence of early settlements still being found to this day.
