African Island Adventure

By Islomaniac | February 24, 2008

The great thing about private islands, is that they are quite literally everywhere.  One region that doesn’t get a lot of attention, but has some amazing private island resorts is Africa.  Today I thought I would feature a couple of private island resorts that may be worth checking out while on your next African Safari.

Mfangano IslandMfangano Island Camp, Kenya

Set in the waters of the world famous Lake Victoria, Mgangano Island Camp is the ideal African island retreat.  The hotel is made up of just six rooms which are set near the waters edge and decorated with traditional furnishings.

There is a lot to do on and around the island too. Fish for giant Nile perch, swim in the sparkling waters, take time to take in the remarkable African wildlife or visit one of the villages on the island and explore the hidden caves of the interior.

A weeks stay at Mfangano is just $1,925/wk. Vist Private Islands Online for more details.

Quilalea Island, MozambiqueQuilalea

Quilálea Island which is part of a unique island marine sanctuary is located in the Indian Ocean.  The resort which just opened in 2002 accomodates 18 guests in 9 luxury villas.  Constructed out of indigenous materials, each villas comes with an antique shower, natural rock walls and colonial ceiling fans.

The food on the island is rumored to be incredible.  The restaurant which overlooks the ocean features Mozambican cuisine which has been influenced by Portugal and is prepared by their in-house gourmet chef.

There are countless things to do on the island including snorkeling, fly fishing, surf casting, canoing, historical tours, sailing trips and of course world class diving.

Quilálea island is a no stress vacation destination. The island is malaria-free and all the water on the island is provided via a desalination plant. Therefore, instead of a breeding ground for mosquitoes, it is a nursing ground for hawk beak turtles and humpback whales.

A week’s stay at Quilalea is a very reasonable $2625/wk. For more information on accessing the island and rates visit Private Islands Online
