A Reader Ask’s

By Islomaniac | February 26, 2008

From time to time I get questions from reader’s that I feel are worth sharing with everyone else. Here is a question one reader recently sent me.

Mark,

I was recently reading an article in Forbes about Private Islands. All the islands seem really expensive, is it really possible for everyone to own a private island?

Thanks, Terrance and that is actually a really good question. I often chastise the media for only featuring the super expensive private islands owned by the rich and famous. The truth is although there are a lot of pricey islands, there are also a lot of more affordable islands on the market.

The truth is, a large percentage of our population could afford a private island if they wanted to. Of course there are a few “buts” to thisPrivate island statement. The fact of the matter is for the typical middle class family, although they may not be able to afford a massive, tropical island with a mansion, chances are they could afford a private island.

Private islands in many areas of the world are well within the price range of the average family. It may mean that you can’t afford the fancy car, or you may have to buy a slightly smaller house, but at the end of the day if the desire is there you will be able to afford a private island. I always recommend to people interested in buying an island, but worried about finances to talk to their friends who have cottages or second homes, the expense and the investment is really quite similar.

In the end if you really want a private island of your own you would be surprised how far drive, ingenuity, thriftiness and practicality can take you towards achieving your private island dream.
