Durrat Al Bahrain
By Islomaniac | March 13, 2008
It’s not only Dubai that is actively constructing private islands. Bahrain is also in the process of constructing a series of articficial islands. The $1.2 billion project will consist of a series of 13 man-made islands covering an area of 20 million square meters. The island will consist of six atolls, five petal islands that are fish shaped, and cresent shaped island. The islands will be home to five star hotels, an 18 hold golf course, 12 bridges and a marina. Work on the $6 billion project stalled a month ago over disputes over pay. The largely immigrant workforce are demanding better salaries and better living conditions in the work camps where they are housed.
I think artificial islands are great, and I think some of the projects that are currently underway are amazing, but it should not be done at the exploitation of others. Here is hoping that work continues again soon and a fair deal is reached.
