Kefalonia and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

Kefalonia

For avoid readers or movie buffs who are familiar with Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, the Greek Island of Kefalonia may sound familiar. Kefalonia is the largest of the western Greek Island and unlike party island of Mykanos the island is better known for its Venetian architecture than its drunken college students.

Kefalonia was its busiest a few years ago when Penelope Cruz and Nicholas Cage descended on the island to film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin where the novel by Louis De Bernières is set. Rumor has it it was the beauty of Kefalonia that inspired Cage to buy his own private island.

The island just isn’t famous for the famous film. Myrtos Beach which is on the northwest of the island is among the worlds best beaches. What makes Kefalonia so great is its commitment to preserving its traditional way of life. Strict planning codes ensure that all building must follow the established rectangular form Kefaloniaand be made of comparable materials. That being said, accommodations are not hard to find. There are a number of hotels on the island and if you fall in love with the island a new villa development is being constructed with prices starting at just over $1 million US.

One of the reasons this island has evaded the onslaught of mass tourism is that it has historically been somewhat harder to get to than many others. In the past you had to fly to Athens and then connect flights. Today there are direct charter flights to the island, although they are somewhat infrequent.
