Monte Cristo’s Treasure Island to be Opened for First Time

According to the Time’s Online the secluded and mysterious island where the Count of Monte Cristo found buried treasure in the novel by Alexadre Dumas is being opened to the public for the first time.

The island, which is 10 square kilometers in size is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Italian mainland and

Corsica. The island uninhabited and has functioned as a state-protected nature preserve and bird sanctuary.

Historically, the island has only been open to researchers who apply for special permission. The Tuscan Archipelago Parks Commission, which manages the seven island which makes up the archipelago, has said that I will now allow 1,000 visitors a year to visit the island in tours guided by the Forestry Corps. A representative for the island notes that the projects aim is to further its mission towards environmentally compatible and sustainable tourism.
