Island or Cruise Ship

By Islomaniac | April 6, 2008

AZ Island

When I came across AZ Island I wasn’t sure I was looking at a cruise ship or an artificial island. To me it looks like both, and in many ways it is! This futuristic project which is being developed by Alstom Marine and architect Jean-Philippe Zoppini is being dubbed the titanic of the future.

The project, according to its developers is essentially an island that is capable of movement, albeit slower than a cruise ship. If it is ever completed it will measure 400 meters long by 300 meters wide and be able to carry 10,000 passengers. The project which would be 29 stories high, would need its own marina for docking.

According to its developers, the project could actually be less expensive to build per square meter than the Queen Mary II- the world’s current largest ocean liner. If this is indeed confirmed the project could be quite economically feasible.

Some people are concerned that this project may end up being more than a top market tourist site. Some imagine it being developed as a haven for paranoid billionaires, or that it would declare itself an autonomous territory. I would just like to see it be built first!
