Virgin Gorda: A Sailors Dream

By Islomaniac | April 14, 2008

Virigin Gorda, BVIVirigin Gorda is the third largest and second most populated island in the British Virgin Islands.  The island, despite being the archetype of classic island beauty, gets relatively little attention in the media or from tourists heading to the Caribbean.  This may soon change, as the island has slowly been gaining a reputation as one of the worlds top sailing destinations.

The island has been popular with sailors for ages.  In fact, the first sailor to visit the island was Christopher Columbus, who named the island.  Columbus gave the island the name “the fat virgin” because its silhouette resembles a rotund woman lying on her back.

A great website STL Today recently put out an article about the history of Virgin Gorda as well as the best spots for sailing around the island.
