Another Abandoned Russian Island
By Islomaniac | April 18, 2008
A few days ago I posted this article about an abandoned Soviet floating city, that was abandoned after the fall of communism. However, this man made island is not the only abandoned island in Russia. Off the coast of St. Petersberg sits Fort Alexander, an abandoned fortress sitting on a man-made island. Constructed in the 1800s, the fort has over 100 cannon ports providing 360-degree defense. After the Crimean War it was initially used as a military storehouse. Under communism the facility was used as a dangerous plague research center. Today the fortress is deserted and most of its interior has been stripped. Even today, visitors who choose to go to the island are advised to wear a respirator and rubber boots!
