What’s New in the Maldives?
By Islomaniac | April 26, 2008
I love the Maldives, therefore whenever an article comes about this tiny nation of about 1,196 islands I love to feature it. Of all the islands in the Maldives, and there is debate about how many there are, only about 200 are inhabited. This means there is enormous potential for the development of a large tourist industry. In fact the industry is getting so large that last year the government granted approval for the development of 35 more resort island to open up business over the next 25 years.
The recent article published in the Independent takes us on a tour of the Maldives. Beginning in Male, the Capital of the Maldives, the author takes us to Anantara a new resort spread acrossed to islands and features beach cabins with indoor-outdoor bathrooms and dolphin safaries. Later the author visits the Four Seasons at Landaa Giraavaru, a exorbitantly tasteful yet eco-friendly resort featuring 50 beach bungalows and 28 water bungalows.
The article is an excellent overview of some of the best resorts in the Malidves and how to get to them. I am curious how people in the Maldives feel? Are you happy to see more development, and do you welcome more tourists? Or would you prefer if the islands were left untouched?
