Island of Sark Embraces Democracy

By Islomaniac | April 29, 2008

Sark IslandA few weeks ago on the island of Sark four and a half centuries of feudalism were brought to an end with the Privy Council approved changes to the laws governing Sark, and island located in the Channel Islands.  Sark Island is located 80 miles of the south coast of England and has been governed by a mix of landowners and elected people’s deputies since it was settled in the 1600s.  Feudalism was brought to an end after a referendum in which the islanders voted for democracy. The change comes after pressure was put on Sark to change its feudal system to comply with European human rights laws and other international obligations.  Feudalism is not the only thing that makes this island interesting.  The three mile long island is completely self-sufficient an d care free.  The only forms of transport permitted on the island are horse-drawn vehicles, bicycles, tractors and battery powered buggies.  To read the complete article about Sark Island visit the Times Online.
