Pulau Samosir: An Island on an Island
By Islomaniac | May 12, 2008
Although rare, from time to time you come across an island that is large enough that it has its own lake. Even more rare is to have an island with a lake that has an island on it. So rare is an island within an island that I am not even sure if there are any on the market right now. Currently the largest island on an island is Samosir or Palau Somsir. Pulau Samosir is a large volcanic sand located in Lake Toba which is located on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The island 245 miles or 650 square kilometers in size and is inhabited.
The lake and island were formed after the eruption of a super volcano about 75,000 years ago. Samosir is a popular tourist destination due to the fantastic vistias it offers. In addition since the island is the centre of the Batak culture and many of the people’s artifacts reamin on the island.
