International-Style Vacations at Home

By Islomaniac | July 15, 2008

Republic IslandInternational travel is growing rapidly around the world, however here in the US international travel is actually on the decline. Most economists attribute this trend to high gas prices and the mortgage crisis that has crippled the nation.  Yesterday Good Morning America did an interesting segment on how Americans can get a taste of international travel without leaving the country.

Although the story featured many interesting mainland attractions the correspondent also featured a private island.  The island featured was Republic Island a quaint 2-acre island that rents for about $100/night.  The island features a historic cedar log cabin that has three bedrooms, electricity and running water.  As the abc correspondant notes Republic Island offers an exotic vacation without requiring a passport.
