Amphibious Plane for Island Travel
By Islomaniac | July 19, 2008
Island transportation ranges from the basic canoe to a luxurious private jet. In the near future, island owners may be travelling to their private islands via an amphibious plane. The ICON A-5 aircraft got one step closer to becoming a reality when a prototype took to the skies last week in California.
The ICON A-5 is a composite carbon fiber, two-seater airplane that is capable of both landing and taking off from either water or a runway. Featuring a folding wing design for easy transport and storage, the A5 also features retractable landing gear for flying off land and water with equal finesse reaching an estimated top speed of 120 mph.
It’s the planes amphibious qualities that make it ideal for island owners. The plane would allow owners to take off from a mainland runway and land in the water near their island. It will be interesting to see how this plane sells when it hits the market. The success of recent tests makes me believe we may not have to wait too long.
