Liberty Island

Liberty IslandIt’s a time of war, change and hope for our country so I thought today I would feature a symbol of what we all strive for, not just as American’s but as human beings. The Statue of Liberty was presented to the United States by the people of France in 1886 to commerate the centennial of the signing of the decleration of independence. Located on Liberty Island, New York, the statue has historically often been one of the first glimpses of the United States for millions of immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe.  Here is what is inscriped on the statue.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
