Floating Cities of the Future Part I
In the not too distant future millions of humans may become island residents, living on massive floating cities around the globe. Weather it be due to global warming, or just a result of human preference the future of island living will no doubt be interesting. This is the first part in a multi-part series exploring the island cities of the future.
One project that has been floating around for a while (no pun intended) is Freedom Ship. If the Freedom Ship is ever built it will be the world’s largest floating community, comprised of live on residents who both work and play on the ship and travelers who visit the ship for a brief period of time as it travels the world.
The ambitious project, although still unbuilt has managed to sell 1/5 of its on-board lviing units. If built, the ship will be a one mile long, energy self sufficient floating city with everything included from parks and playgrounds, to apartments, businesses, schools, casinos and shipping malls.
Rather than docking, which would be difficult for such a large ship, the 25 story ship will be supplied by aircraft that land directly on the ship. Rather than docking, aircraft will land to resupply the ship and deposit and pick up residents. At 25 stories high the ship would accommodate 40,000 full-time residents and 60,000 total occupants. Though funding is still needed, early signs seem to indicate that the project will eventually be developed. For more information visit Freedom Ship.
