Rainwater Harvesting and Private Islands

Rainwater Harvesting

One topic that I don’t often talk about on this website is rainwater harvesting. In many island regions where fresh water is scarce, and importing fresh water is costly, many island owners utilize rainwater harvesting to meet their needs.

Typically rainwater harvesting invokes images of large plastic drums covered with moss. However, just like other island technologies rainwater harvesting technology is changing rapidly.

One new technology is the CISTA system. This aesthetically pleasing device consists of an 8-foot stainless steel column that acts as a king of planted downspout. It can collect up to 100 gallons of water at a time, creating enough pressure to operate a soaker hose located at the base of the unit. In addition its slim design makes it easy for shipment everywhere.
