Famous Island Washing Away
Erosion is an unavoidable force of nature, however, erosion directly or indirectly due to man’s activities is affecting an increasing number of islands around the world. It was recently reported that Jekyll Island, which is located off the east coast of Southern Georgia is beginning to disappear. While the south side of the beach is actually accumulating sand brought in by the tide, the north side of the island is literally being washed away.
According to reports up to 60% of the island has eroded since the 1800s. Although experts agree that storms and tides contribute to the erosion, global warming and rising sea levels have also contributed to the problem.
The dramatic loss of Jekyll Island has begun to catch the attention of a lot of people. For decades it was the winter playground of some of America’s riches families including the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts and the Pulitzers. Now many fear that its bright future may be at risk along with many mid-Atlantic coastal communities.
