Island in the Mur
Everone wins when islands are constructed and incorporated into urban spaces. These urban islands often provide a gathering place for a community that may not other wise be feasible in crowded metropolitan areas. One of my favorite urban artificial islands in the Island in the Mur.
This artificial island in the River Mur in Graz is a both a project of art and architecture. Built in 2003, the 155-foot (47 meter) long reticular steel construction, offers spectacular new space on the river Mur. Located under a curvaceous dome the half opened shell provides a meeting place for young and old. It holds a cafe, an amphitheater and a playground. The curved and twisted shaped structure swimming in the middle of the river is connected to both river banks by two steel bridges make the island extremely accessible.
