In their popular online column Vanity Fair recently answered a readers question about how much one should expect to pay for a private island. Answering the question, journalist Peter Newcomb noted that

Five years ago, Mel Gibson bought a spectacular 5,400-acre island in Fiji’s northern Lau chain for $10 million—a steal at $1,800 an acre.

Generally, tropical islands fetch more than those in temperate climates, as do islands with quick access to civilization. Another factor: the stability of the local government. An islet off the coast of Nicaragua is currently selling for $144,000 an acre, while a 45-acre beauty in the British Virgin Islands is listed at more than $1 million.

Although generally speaking this is a pretty accurate summary. However when purchasing a private island their are and endless number of criteria that one should look at. In addition to climate and local government one should also look at development opportunities and laws, size of the island, access to resources such as fresh water, access to the mainland, whether the property is freehold or lease hold, commute time to island and of course investment potential. The importance of any one of these factors varies from person to person which is why it is important to have a private island expert available to assist you in the purchase process.

For more information on owning, selling and renting a private island visit the resources section at private islands online.

According to the Sun island fever has been growing in the country due to a record breaking jack pot in the countries lottery. Krolow discussed the plethora of celebrities who own or have owned private islands including John Lennon, Johny Depp and Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. Krolow was careful to note that Chris Krolow, CEO of Private Islands Inc. and publisher of Private Islands Magazine, says celebrities make up a small percentage of island owners, with many buyers being business people looking for cottages.

There are islands to be had off Nova Scotia for under $100,000. And he can probably round something up in Georgian Bay for around $300,000.

If so, you may be interested in a private island in Fiji is being sold online for $33.39 million Located in the far east of Fiji within the Lau group, Blue Lagoon Island lies adjacent to U.S. actor Mel Gibson’s Mago Island.

The 225-acre island is one mile long and a third of a mile wide. It is encircled by a 5,000-acre lagoon that offers protection from extreme tides, providing the island with calm tranquil waters, which are said to offer clear views 200 feet underwater.

It is accessible via a 3,400-foot runway.

The scarcity of private islands coupled with the growing popularity of Fiji as a tourist attraction, increasingly favored by Americans and Europeans, has further increased demand for the ultimate seclusion that a “private” island ensures, according to eBay.

The island property was appraised at US$10 million in 1999, prior to any development according to the listing. Recently two accredited valuation companies concurred that the current value is estimated at $25 million euros.

The article doesn’t say what the neame of the island is, but according to sources it may be Katafanga Island which you can see here.

The 6-bedroom house, which was reportedly purchased on December 1st, is estimated to be worth over $2M and is on an island only accessible by boat. Fagaro Island is one of many islands in the Stockholm archipelago, a popular summer retreat for Swedes living in the Stockholm area.

There is no word whether Tiger will be joining Elin on the island but it has been speculated that this might be Tiger’s new home for a while as his 155 foot yacht “Privacy” is reportedly being prepared for departure from its home at a Florida Pier.

This is why countless celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Tom Hanks and Mick Jagger all retreat to private islands and private island resorts on their vacations. MSNBC recently wrote an interesting article featuring some of the more exclusive island destinations that celebrities jet off to when needing a little R&R. Here is what they had to say.

Question: If you’re Jennifer Lopez (the ninth-richest woman in entertainment with a net worth of $110 million), you have a $350 million fragrance and fashion empire, and your husband just bought ownership in the Miami Dolphins, where do you spend your winter vacations?

Answer: Anywhere you damn well please, of course.

Necker noted that he spends about 6 months of the year ont he expansive and luxurious private island and spends the rest of the year traveling the world, fullfilling his obligations as CEO of the Virgin corporation. Here is what Branson had to say.

Tell us about the holiday destinations you own
I’m really fortunate to own a number of great places that I love visiting but all of the destinations we own work as a business, even Necker. It has a staff of 60 and has to work as a viable business.

In South Africa we’ve got the Ulusaba game reserve. We’ve also built a lovely place in the Moroccan mountains called the Kasbah where I try to spend a bit of time as it’s so peaceful and then there’s the a ski lodge in Verbier which is great fun.

Mustique is a gorgeous private island located in the part of the Caribbean that forms St Vincent and The Grenadines.

Just three miles in length the island is fringed in white sand beaches and is surrounded by crystal blue waters. Owned by the Mustique Company, the island has long attracted A-list celebrities, the super wealthy and in this case royalty, all of who are seeking privacy.

If memory serves me correctly Prince William and Kate Middleton have vacationed on this island before. Perhaps this will be when Will finally pops the question?
