Quebec, the francophone part of Canada is an often overlooked island region that has many unique properties available. One of the newest properties in Quebec to emerge on the international island market is Ile de la Baie Bertrand. This 4.1 acre island which is located on 31-Mile Lake is known for being the most desirable lake in the Gatineau and is just 90 minutes from Ottawa Airport.

Situated on the island is an immaculate four-bedroom main house (built in 2003) and fully-equipped two-bedroom guest house with sleeping loft (2004), both constructed with best quality materials and careful attention to detail, fit and finish. Other facilities include:

Solar-powered from roof-top panels, with propane generator backup and state-of-the-art inverter and battery system in free-standing structures.

Direct telephone line to the mainland and satellite internet connection with Wi-Fi.

Propane stoves, ovens and water heaters.

Both houses insulated for winter use.

Separate septic system for each house, cleaned and serviced in 2009.

Stone firepit and terraced herb and vegetable garden.

Cedar tree house in the woods behind the guest house.

Double main dock with adjacent boat house, and second dock in private bay.

Boats and furnishings also available if desired.

The family feud that has torn apart one of France’s richest dynasties officially ended this week when the Bettencourts, heirs to the L’Oréal cosmetics empire, signed a surprise truce between warring mother and daughter. But France is still reeling from what the spat has revealed about the nation.

Among the revelations which you can read about in the Guardian is that the uber rich family as well as the secret ownership of Arros, a private island in the Seychelles, which appeared to have been promised to Banier the man at the centre of the family feud.

Banier noted to the guardian…

“Can I make clear that I couldn’t give a damn about their money?” Banier told investigators. “That island, I hate it, it’s full of mosquitos, it’s tiny, and it’s very humid. Plus there are sharks. I hate islands. Johnny Depp has two islands in the Pacific where he’s invited me several times and I never go.”

However, what many people fail to realize is that there are literally hundreds, perhaps thousands of islands available for rent around the world. Fox News recently published an excellent article highlighting the experiences of a number of former island renters. Here is an excerpt from the article:

About five years ago travel writer Joshua Berman and his wife capped their honeymoon by renting a private island, French Louie Caye, off the Placencia Peninsula in Belize.

He recalls that “it was an incredible experience watching that boat pull away and knowing we were all alone,” which they were for a night and the following day, though they also enjoyed a little non-human companionship. “We had two dogs and a fridge stocked with shrimp and fish in a small wooden cabin. We could see a few other islands in the distance, but otherwise, it felt like the Caribbean was all ours. We cooked our own meals, snorkeled the coral around the island, and sat in the sand watching the dogs chase crabs back into the water.”

The dream of a private island paradise vacation seems impossibly remote, a whim reserved for the annoyingly wealthy blessed with too much leisure time. But it turns out the dream can be yours for $22 a night, just a two-and-a-half-hour drive and a short paddle from Montreal.

Early this summer, my wife, sons Matthew, 6, and Owen, 4, paddled to a small island we had all to ourselves for the weekend at the Saranac Lake Islands Public Campground in New York state. It’s one of the few camping sites in this part of the continent that is water access only - you need a boat to get to its 87 camping spots.

The author adds

Many of the islands are large and have two to five campsites spread far apart. But there are 10 islands that you can have completely to yourself, and we had the good fortune to find one that wasn’t booked - Hocum Point Island.

To read the full article visit the Montreal Gazette.

What many people don’t realize is Maine has a wide variety of beautiful freehold private islands. One of the newest islands to come on the market is Bare Island, an unspoiled 77 acre island located in Machiasport off Bucks Harbor.

The dramatic island offers high bluffs that overlook beautiful sand beaches with thick forests and two natural springs. Plenty of wildlife and rugged Maine coast yet still just minutes to Bucks Harbor making this one of the last inner harbor island on the coast without any building restrictions except for the normal shoreland zoning.

There is plenty of room for development of this island and you would still have full privacy because of the thick forests throughout or you can simply keep it for own paradise. The topography is absolutely incredible and the forests are laced with beautiful moss covered trees and rocks. There is a 4 bedroom custom home on the inner harbor side with plenty of room for a large family. There is an attached tree house that houses two of the bedrooms and a very large great room with cathedral ceilings.

For more information on this property visit Private Islands Online.

Therefore when I came across little Memaloose island I thought I would share this unique property.

If you’re looking for the ultimate lakefront property this might be for you. There are only three private islands on Lake Pend Oreille and for the first time in decades one has come on the market. Memaloose Island is a boat ride from Hope, Idaho.

“The island is a 13 acre piece of property with the shores of Lake Pend Oreille wrapped around the entire thing,” Tom Puckett with Century 21 Riverstone said. The current owners of the island are John and Laura Knight.

“Everybody that’s ever come here, all of a sudden they get a completely peaceful attitude about them. Something about the place you know,” Knight said.

Deer, moose, and other wildlife like stopping by. John an Laura say the name of the island – Memaloose – is native for a place to release the spirits. It’s hardly been developed and historic cabins sit untouched.

“It’s got the original homestead, which is 100 years old,” Tom Puckett said.

The island comes equipped with underground power, a well, and the potential of building three to four homes, though John would like to see the future owner preserve the rustic feel.

“I’d like to see it got to a family. I’d like to keep it from being developed,” John said.

Back in 1962, John’s parents bought the island but now the family is selling it. Their asking price has dropped from $16 Million dollars to $5 Million. The main reason for the sale is that taking care of an island is a lot of work.

One of my favorite new islands is Little Ironside Island. The property includes a waterfront home and two additional cottages each with full bath with 5 additional beds. The property totals 5 bedrooms and 6 bath and is currently configured to sleep 11. There is a 375 sq ft floating dock for recreational purposes. The island has a 100 ft. of deep water covered boat dockage. There is a spectacular pool and deck built into the rock. ~1000 feet of frontage. Additional acreage available as building site or can be aquired to keep entire island private. The island has great investment potential and would be ideal as either as a family retreat or a small rental business.
