One of my favorite new islands is Little Ironside Island. The property includes a waterfront home and two additional cottages each with full bath with 5 additional beds. The property totals 5 bedrooms and 6 bath and is currently configured to sleep 11. There is a 375 sq ft floating dock for recreational purposes. The island has a 100 ft. of deep water covered boat dockage. There is a spectacular pool and deck built into the rock. ~1000 feet of frontage. Additional acreage available as building site or can be aquired to keep entire island private. The island has great investment potential and would be ideal as either as a family retreat or a small rental business.

Also known as Pretty Joe Rock Sea Shell Key is located in the heart of the Florida Keys! Conveniently located in Marathon, Sea Shell Key is also known as Pretty Joe Rock. This quaint Keys island is surrounded by the sparkling turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The island home features, air conditioning, bamboo and rattan furniture, ceiling fans and TV/VCR. The living room offers a cathedral ceiling with exposed beams and a mix of wood and tile flooring. The master suite features a queen size bed and a sunken Jacuzzi tub with walk-in double head shower. The second bedroom has a full bed draped in tropical netting. French doors lead from the great room to the screened front porch and to a side covered deck, which is ideal for watching the sunrise or set. This is the perfect way to begin or end your day in the Keys.

The home is surrounded by landscaped boardwalks and an ancient exposed reef features native vegetation such as black mangroves, sea grapes, and pitch apples, which attract a variety of migrating birds. In the water around the island, guests will occasionally be greeted by dolphins, manatees, parrot and angel fish all swimming in the crystal clear warm waters. We include an outboard run-about boat for your use, kayaks, fishing gear and snorkel gear are available upon request to complete your island adventure.

The essay chronicals an islands evolution from rustic camping retreat to primitive cabin to full turn-key property. The article is both well written and insightful offering potential island owners a lot to think about when it comes to making their island dreams a reality, and figuring out exactly what that reality looks like. Here is what the author had to say.

My friends used to think I was always bragging about it: “I’m going to my island this weekend.” Island this, island that. But the problem was we didn’t have a cottage. What was I supposed to call it?

The very fact that we didn’t have a cottage was the beauty of it. I loved that it was rustic.

To read the full article visit the Globe and Mail.

We didn’t have plumbing. We didn’t have electricity. We didn’t sleep under a roof. Who needs satellite TV at a cottage? What’s the point of getting away from the city if you’re going to be inside all day

Often when people think of family friendly private islands they think of the private islands visited by cruise lines. In fact their are a number of Private Island Resorts around the world that cater to young families.

One of my favorites is El Conquistador Resort and Spa in Puerto Rico. Much of the resort is situated on the coastal mainland, but the resort also includes a 100 acre private island. Located in Fajardo Puerto Rico this Caribbean resort (not all inclusive) the resort features a water park and a kids club. This resort (re)opened in 2008 after a $120M renovation, and a new water park named for Puerto Rico’s Coqui tree frog.

This 100-acre private island, has an exquisite beach, scuba and fishing excursions, and activities such as waverunning, windsurfing, sailing, horse-riding. For beach-lounger types, waiters come around and serve your drinks; there’s a cafe and bar too.
